everybody. during the state of the union address, president obama talked about fixing the nation's infrastructure. things like the 70,000 or so structurally deficient bridges across the country. he emphasized the need to get these projects done with a combination of public and private funds and using american workers. "the new york times" reports today the president is going to talk in detail about those plans in a series of interviews. first part of the plan is called a fix it first strategy which invests $50 million in our highways bridges transit systems and airports the ones in most need of repair. congress would have to approve the money. part two would seek to and freedom to marry. we'll be back with more show on this wednesday. stay with us. we'll see you after the break. you know who is coming on to me now? you know the kind of guys that do reverse mortgage commercials? those types are coming on to me all the time now. here "america live" today. i'm megyn kelly. president obama has been ramping up the pressure on republicans warning that our economy, jobs, lives, could be in danger, if these scheduled cuts across the board go through. but the latest numbers show if the automatic reductions take place, there will be 85 billion dollars in cuts this year. that's equal to what the government spends in nine days. even if it happens, the government is projected more than last year, so he you see, we're talking about a decrease in the increase in spending and you may be asking yourself how can we survive and live on, with just the paltry amount of spending? well, where would we look for the example? how about last year when we did it just fine? all this leading to questions about how the fallout could be so dramatic. so dire, so awful. when the total federal budget is actually increasing. chris stirewalt is our national digital news editor. how can we do it? where can we find the historical example of the surviving on a budget that's cut in this manner. oh, last year. i mean, what's the answer to

is the mi nofert -- >> didn't you worry it was? >> actually, no, i thought barack obama was going to win to be honest with you. i didn't. because the thing is if you look at the trajectory of the minority share of the electorate, it's been growing by a pretty consistent 2% every four years. so if you look at the electorate when bill clinton got elected versus when ronald reagan got elected, the electorate has been changing for a very long time but the right didn't notice because they have been able to use these tricks to gin up their base and maximize their vote and they have always used the far right to do it. they get them excited over cultural issues -- >> what went wrong this time? for every african-american vote or latino vote you were going to lose a more conservative white person from say the southwest, but that doesn't exactly happen. the white vote sort of been up a bit for obama and then the african-american and the other minority votes zoomed. >> and part of the problem is number one they have lost the cities. they're losing including the urban white vote, losing more educated

did we see results like this in ohio where obama won the state and sherrod brown was re-elected but republicans got 12 of the available 16 house seats. when jimmy carter was drummed out of office in 1980, he managed to carry 900 counties nationally. when michael dukakis ran for president in 1988, he suffered a 40-state landslide but claimed 119 counties. bill clinton won with 1,524 counties. do you know how many counties obama won last year? 690. that's it. 690. even though he won a convincing popular vote majority. gerrymandering wasn't a complete nonfactor in 2012. the gop probably did grab a few extra seats because of it. but the real problem for democrats is that their base of support is less spread out geographically than it's ever been, which means they can win presidential races and even control the senate, but when it comes to the house, their best, their only chance for the foreseeable future is a massive anti-gop tide, like something we saw in 2006 or 2008. short of that, the era of republican speakers could last for a long time. okay, that does it for "the cyc
